With Elphin freed and Maelgwn eating his own words Elphin makes a wager that his horses will beat Maelgwn's in a race. A course is set and the best jockeys and horses are choosen. Maelgwn's horse trips half way through the race leaving Elphin's horse to be the clear winner. The spot where the horse landed Taliesin instructs Elphins men to dig and a large pot of gold and riches are dug up and this is Elphiin's reward for taking Taliesin from the river and raising him with love and care.
